Richmond, Virginia is a great place that rarely comes to mind when the word “vacation” is mentioned. Richmond, does just about everything well. It’s a family-friendly city. There is a ton of culture and tradition. Its historic significance is often overlooked. In fact, it may sound strange, but the city’s lack of any monumentally important landmarks or world changing significance is part of what makes Richmond so fantastic. It means that you can spend 24 hours there without feeling bad that you missed something. At the same time, you’ll be itching to come back and discover more about what makes Richmond so special. For now though, you have 24 hours to see one of the most underrated cities in America. What to do in Richmond Virginia for: The Outdoorsman: Virginia may be for lovers, but it’s also for those who love the outdoors. Richmond escapes the “big city” stigma and offers quite a lot of wide open spaces for those who just can’t stay inside. The Canal Walk is the perfect spot to start the day. You can choose to take a boat tour on the canal itself, but a brisk walk in the morning is a great way to start the day. And, while you’re walking, be sure to check out the Virginia Capital Trail and all the historical markers along the way. If you really like walking, you can stay on the trail until you reach Jamestown and Williamsburg. If walking isn’t your thing, you can always take a guided bike tour or rent one for yourself from one of several bike rental companies. If you want to get even closer to nature, rent a kayak or paddle-board and head out into the James River. After you’re all worn out, you can finish the day at the Lewis Ginter Botanical Garden or at Maymont Mansion and Gardens. Both are gorgeous, peaceful, and a well-deserved end to the day of anybody who loves nature. The History Buff: Virginia is full of history. Richmond is the perfect place in Virginia to get a healthy dose of history.The Virginia Holocaust Museum is an absolute must see. It provides a sobering glimpse into the past, as history often does. The American Civil War Museum, the Richmond National Battlefield Park, and the Virginia War Memorial all remind of us sacrifices made by men and women in this country, but in their own unique way. All are a perfect way to spend an afternoon of learning, remembering, and seeing where we are now because of all that’s happened. The Hollywood Cemetery is a great place to stop when you have a few extra minutes. You can stay a little longer for a tour, but the cemetery isn’t just another graveyard. Confederate soldiers and even a couple of US Presidents are buried here. The goal of the staff is to provide a peaceful resting place for those how have died and an aesthetic learning experience for you. St. John’s Episcopal Church is another must see that should top of your day. At first glance, you may not know much about this place. Patrick Henry did. He gave his famous “Give me Liberty, or give me Death” speech right here. The Family Man: Families can sometimes be hard to please for an entire day. This is not the case in Richmond. The Virginia Museum of Fine Arts provides a great experience for anyone, especially if the weather isn’t the best outside. If it is nice, take everyone over to Belle Island. The kids can try their hand at the rock wall, the BMX skills course, or just having a blast playing tag. The adults can enjoy fishing and walking or biking the trails.Science is fun! The Science Museum of Virginia and the Children’s Museum of Richmond are both great places for the entire family. Three Lakes Nature Center offers numerous exhibits and even an aquarium. The Shopaholic: The city of Richmond is perfect for anybody who likes to spend more money than time at a few different places.The Short Pump Mall is the perfect place to spend a few hours or the whole day. There are over 100 stores to choose from, and if you do get tired of trying to get to all of them, there’s plenty of food too! The Short Pump Mall is located in the ritzy part of town, so don’t be afraid to get a little dressy and make a day of it. If you don’t want to stay the whole day at Short Pump, or if big malls aren’t your thing, you can always take your hard earned cash to Carytown. It provides a more traditional shopping experience with smaller specialty stores scattered through a quaint part of town. Think of it as a more traditional shopping experience. The Foodie: Richmond is also a foodie’s paradise. Carytown makes the cut again. Offering unique dining experiences, you won’t find your average Red Robin or TGI Friday’s here. Everything from breakfast at The Daily to dinner at Can Can Brasserie can be had without having to travel too far. If you do want to venture farther out into the city, there are plenty of options. Lemaire, Mama J’s, and The Roosevelt are just a few of the best dining options in the city. After you eat, you have plenty to choose from to cap off your day. Wineries and breweries are abundant. Stop by Hardywood Park Craft Brewery, Legend Brewing, or The Veil for a beer to finish your night. For wine, stop by Secco’s wine bar or Garden Grove Brewing and Urban Winery. The Adventurer: Thrill-seekers rejoice! Richmond also has everything you need to get the adrenaline going. Richmond Raceway has everything from driving schools to major NASCAR events. The Diamond houses Richmond’s minor league baseball team and The Virginia Commonwealth University’s baseball team. Being home to more than a few other colleges, you can catch a game or any other activity at just about every time of the year. Stop by the City Hall Observation Deck on your way to King’s Dominion Amusement Park. Wrapping Up You’ll want to take in the entire city as you head north to ride some fantastic roller coasters and get some thrills.
